Take the back box off and se if you can live with it. The turbo will kill a lot of the noise. Diesels, especially turbo diesels, dont need or want any back pressure from the exhaust and and run better the shorter and more free flowing the exhaust is. Any apparent turbo lag will also reduce as the turbo will spin up quicker.

This is because less of the precious heat gets absorbed by the cylinder walls. About 50 years ago there were tractors and road rollers made with ONE cylinder of several litres for this very reason. Whilst the fuel economy was outstanding the ergonomics were not so good. As to diesel engine economy, there are so many variables to consider.
Replacing the 3.5 [assuming it's a low-compression one still running on carbs and has a clockwork ignition system] with a modern high-compression electronically-managed version of the V8 [closed-loop injection, proper load/speed-mapped ignition] will gain you at least 25% and probably nearer 50% reduction in fuel consumption for a start.
2001 110 Td5 bone stock base model and I get 31mpg on my commute up and down the twisties in the Jura. On a long motorway run at 120km/h so about 75mph with a full load of family, dog, bikes and camping gear I'll drop to about 28mpg driving up and down the Alps. Up to about 50mph your tyres will be killing your fuel consumption.
0. Mine is a 2.4, but essentialy the same donk. You will get much better economy at 100 km/h than 110. If you are in rush then sacrifice the extra fuel, otherwise do a 100, and save the $$$$. Mine will do 1050 to 1100 ( loaded or a trip ) on 115L at 100k's, push it 110k's and it will drop to 900 to 950.

Today drove the same route back home. 220 miles, and the fuel gauge is now showing clear over three-quarters, even after switching off and starting up again later.
